Dad Decides to Uplift His Neighbors Spirits

We’ve all heard the saying, “Laughter is the Best Medicine,” and it turns out science agrees.

Neurologists consider humor as a “mature defense mechanism” alongside other traits such as patience, tolerance, mindfulness, humility, and forgiveness.

Scientists believe mature defense mechanisms can help enhance feelings of control and pleasure, thus assisting people in dealing with conflicting emotions and thoughts.

Additionally, humor and laughter offer physical and mental benefits that can help strengthen our immune function, reduce stress, and decrease feelings of depression and anxiety by boosting the production of endorphins, dopamine, T-cells, and immune proteins. A little humor can also help us gain perspective and increase our problem-solving abilities.

These days, there is no shortage of stress and anxiety as we try to navigate through the public health crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic.

So, Graeme Parsons, a father of two in Regina Saskatchewan, armed himself with a whiteboard and a load of humor to lift the spirits of his neighbors.

Every morning, Parsons posts a different “dad joke” on a whiteboard in his driveway. He also displays an inspirational quote at the end, encouraging people to stay safe and love each other.

In an interview with Global News Canada, Parsons said, “It’s a crazy world we’re living in right now, and there is so much negative all over social media and through the media. It’s a way to start brightening the days of people walking by in my neighborhood.”

Parsons says his motivation for sharing his humor is to help put a smile on people’s faces during such trying times.

According to Parsons, his neighbors truly appreciate his dose of morning humor. “It’s been absolutely amazing; it’s been extremely positive. Everybody in the neighborhood, I see them walking by day after day coming in to check the sign,” Parsons said.

The response has been overwhelming. People take pictures of his board to share his jokes with friends and family who don’t live in the neighborhood.

You don’t have to live in Saskatchewan to enjoy his humor. You can follow Parsons on Instagram @its_a_pundemic and enjoy your daily dose of dad jokes just like his neighbors do.

Parsons has stated he has no plans of stopping his quest to help people laugh anytime soon. “I’ll continue as long as people keep enjoying it and smiling, and as long as people need laughter, which I don’t think ever goes out of style,” Parsons said.
